Detox Salt Bath


I’ve been spending a bit more time thinking about the importance of routines and how consistency yields the best results. In the past I’ve been the type of person that gets excited about something and then once I do it, loose interest. Can you relate? Perhaps this society has encouraged that in me, of feeling that I need to move on to the next thing or that materialist mindset of being bored with something after having it.

That said, I’m currently working on being in the practice of pausing more. Taking care of self, really listening to what I need and also responding to what I’m seeing. Which in this case, has been dry, tangled, too often put in a bun hair. Toenail polish that is chipping (as usual) and un-manicured nails — not to say I need to go to a nail shop, but to say that I am clearly once again neglecting my self-care and body as I work, work, work, work, work, work.

So, in order to try and gain back a sense of control, in which pausing helps me tremendously, I am taking on a new commitment to be consistent with my self-care.

For me that means making regular baths, hair and skin care as well as meditation and yoga. It truly is a “practice.” You don’t just wake up one day with this amazing life of routines and prioritized self-care. You have to decide that it’s important enough to make time for it. That YOU are important enough to make time for.

Amongst the most restoring practices I have in my arsenal, hydrotherapy is certainly at the top of the list. Being in water is incredibly healing for me. In fact, it’s meditative and it stills my mind. So, here is a salt bath recipe I use, especially now since I’ve been combatting a guest who overstayed their welcome — a cold and cough.


These are great because they break down into magnesium, which helps ease tension and assists with circulation and blood pressure.

I love using dried herbs in my bath, when I went to France I brought back a classic herb blend called Herbs de Provence, which have thyme, fennel, rosemary, oregano, summer savory, basil and marjoram. Although they’re traditionally for cooking, I add them for their benefits.

Thyme, Rosemary and Basil are all good for easing tense muscles. Oregano is a highly antibacterial oil. Fennel is know to help with digestion.

I haven’t been to the doctor in more than a decade. I can’t even remember… My mother from a very young age stressed the importance of using herbs and essential oils for their healing benefits. That THIS was the ancient medicine dating all the way back to Egypt.

Essential oil can be used for a multitude of benefits, including physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. So it’s nice to pick a blend of oils that suits whatever it is that you need in that moment.

For this particular detox salt bath I used:

Epsom Salts
Herbs de Provence
Dried Lavender
Cedarwood (grounding)
Lemon (detoxifying)
Ylang Ylang (balancing)
Peppermint (invigorating)
Lavender (calming)
